What should be done with a used needle?

Used needles must be disposed of in a designated sharps container to ensure safety and prevent injury or infection. Sharps containers are specifically designed for this purpose, made from puncture-resistant materials, and are usually sealed to prevent accidental exposure to the needle or other sharp objects. This method protects healthcare workers, waste disposal personnel, and the general public from the risks associated with improperly handled needles, such as needle-stick injuries and the transmission of bloodborne pathogens.

Using regular trash for needle disposal is unsafe, as it can lead to injuries to sanitation workers and potentially expose others to hazardous materials. Reinserting a needle into its original packaging does not sufficiently mitigate risk, as it still poses a danger during handling and might not be secure.
